Portable hoops use a weighted base and can be moved, but they flex more during play and tend to have a shorter lifespan under regular use. If you are committed to building a dedicated court space at home, an in-ground system is the stronger long-term investment.
A 72-inch backboard is the standard size used at the high school and collegiate level, offering the most realistic rebounding angles and the widest shooting surface. It works best in open driveways or dedicated outdoor court areas where you have at least 12 to 15 feet of clear space in front of the backboard. If your space is more limited, a smaller backboard may perform better in that footprint, so consider measuring your available court depth before selecting a system.
In-ground systems require digging a hole, setting the anchor in concrete, and allowing adequate cure time before completing the pole and backboard assembly. Most systems include detailed instructions and all required hardware, and the process is manageable for two people with basic tools over a weekend.
